Biennale Venice VS Triennale Milano

One of the most exciting events during this trip was the 54th Venice Biennale exhibition! Due to being exhausted from the trip we have been stayed in Lido for almost 4 hours. Compares to beach, tanning, and Italian guys, I showed more interested in the art shows, obviously.

Instead of trying to find one interesting exhibition from the information map and analyzing individual posts on the streets, we preferred just go to some random exhibitions. Since we didn't expect much from them, they turned out to be big surprises for us!

Luckily, the ones we went to were both from Chinese artists' works. The first one came from Macao Museum of Art. We sat down and watched the video named 'Passing- Green Island' by Alice Kok. She meant to show us 'At every corner, nature moves around like energy, traveling through the colours and vibrations of our daily life'. Her pictures were taken by manual mode, switching from blurry to clear in order to tell us 'The blurry scene of the past has been brought back, sharpening the actual moment before returning back to the chaos'.

Two other installation designs were so much fun. The first one using turning glasses with photos of the 'Five- Storey Mansions' in Macao to show its development. The second one was designed based on the kaleidoscope, in which multiple mirrors can multiply and cross images of people that pass by the cone, implying that 'whatever we do has a consequence and is likely to be reproduced by anonymous faces in an urban crowd, regardless of how aware we are of that'.

Okay got bored so far? Here comes the fun part! The exhibition name was 'Frogtopia .Hongkornucopia', which was translated directly from a Cantonese word meaning a wonderland of frog. It was created by Frog King, China's first performance artist, who has adopted a frog as his symbol and alter ego. He made daily forays into various parts of the city to work on his Froggy Sunglasses Photography Project, a signature piece of his art for more than 20 years. We loved this idea and his sunglasses and all other stuffs!!

I wished we could have more free time in Venice so that we would be able to explore more fun art and creative exhibitions. Actually what Frog King made was just re-decorate simple sunglasses frames, with some recycled plastic sticks and creative graffiti. 'It's not the lack of beauty in life, but the lack of the eyes of find the beauty', same for fashion designers.

While in Milan, we went to the La Triennale di Milano Design Museum. Except for fashion, Milan is also famous for its great industrial design and interior design. Walking on the streets you can see many stores selling cute furniture and home decorations. After melted in the heat of outdoor Milan, we found cool here!

Liked the display idea that designer's photos and the abstract of his/ her ideas were right next to their works. It didn't have any special function but indeed added more fun to the exhibition and triggered our interests to read it.

'Touching doesn't mean destroying, trying doesn't mean moving, and sitting doesn't mean jumping or camping'- very cute signs to indicate the rules of the museum. Compared to those rigid 'No Photos' and 'No Sketches', this one was more visitor- friendly and easier for us to accept.

Cute chairs and beds, creative and comfy at the same time. I almost fell asleep on one of the comfy chairs.

Renovations have always been the inspiration for designers. As I mentioned above, life needs us to look for its beauty and waits us to discover other sides of it. Such simple items of home decoration were recreated by them and turned into some smart design works. Being creative and being smart. Keep walking!

Museum tour tips:
1. Venice Biennale holds every other year. Get the information map first and arrange time well. Certain bookstore sells brochure of the exhibition.
2. The Triennale design museum is located on Viale Alemagna. Take Metro red line to Cadorna F.N and walk within 20 minutes. Some temporary exhibitions need extra tickets.
