Something made by machine

I think it could be much more interesting if you read 'Something by hand' first.

We do need to sit down and do some hand work, but we also can't live without machines. We need them to wave fabrics, to dye, to print, to wash, to apply finishes, and to mass produce them. Visiting Rati gave me one of the deepest impression actually. All the knowledge I learned about textile was refreshing in my mind while we were leading to go through each mill and each production room. It was pretty amazing that only one factory has all the mills to finish the whole process of making fabrics.

Spinning filling yarns.

Waving warp and weft yarns into certain patterns of a piece of fabric.

Here comes the Louis Vuitton!

Washing before dyeing. There was another washing process after dyeing in order to wash out the remnants of dyes.

Piles of half-done raw fabrics.

Display of woodblock printing modes.

After making fabrics, we need machines helping us manufacturing garments. Photos were not allowed in Belvest company, which manufactured tailored men's suits. They produced their own suits as well as for some big brands  such as Hermes and some rising companies around the globe. Those old sewing machines were displayed outside of their factory maybe were using to make a huge contrast to those advanced mass-producing machines inside.

This visiting was impressive as well. I have never seen such a manufacturing factory, in which different people in charge of different process in the streamline. Some were making patterns, some were cutting, some were ironing, while some were sewing. Workers were also divided into separate parts as working with either jackets or pants. My dear fashion design friends Catherine was so excited seeing this and wanted the sewing machine so bad, which can sew and overlock the edges at same time in order to save time as well as increase efficiency. So did I! But instead of getting those unbelievable machines, what I eager to do was going back home and sew! Practice makes perfect, it's been my motto for many years.

As to embroidery, some people are embroidering by hand while some others were doing it by machine. Zibetti e Orsini owns embroidery machines that can mass-produce those fabrics within short time period. It was the last industry appointment for the whole trip which was somewhat relaxed and fun. They also gave us some fabrics which were such great gifts for us, especially fashion design students, although there were no place to squeeze them in my suitcase...

Here is a video of how the embroidery machine works.
